For et par m\u00e5neder siden st\u00f8dte jeg – i en alder af 46 \u00e5r- tilf\u00e6ldigt p\u00e5 f\u00e6nomenet aphantasia. Det var som om t\u00e6ppet fuldst\u00e6ndigt blev trukket v\u00e6k under mig, da det gik op for mig, at jeg var en af \u00e5benbart ganske f\u00e5 (ca. 1-3%) mennesker, der ikke er i stand til at fremkalde indre visuelle billeder i v\u00e5gen tilstand.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Selvf\u00f8lgelig har jeg altid vist, at jeg ikke i bogstavelig forstand SER noget, n\u00e5r jeg lukker \u00f8jnene og pr\u00f8ver at forestille mig en hvid sandstrand eller en af mine n\u00e6rmestes ansigt. Det der er kommet fuldst\u00e6ndig bag p\u00e5 mig er, at de fleste andre mennesker rent faktisk er i stand til at fremkalde visuelle billeder alene ved tankens kraft. Det er alts\u00e5 ikke bare metaforisk, n\u00e5r de taler om, at \u201dse noget for sig\u201d.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

N\u00e5r jeg har delt min nye viden med venner og familie, er det min erfaring, at f\u00e6nomenet er lige s\u00e5 fascinerende for dem, som det er for mig. Det er der kommet nogle rigtig interessante samtaler ud af. Det er sv\u00e6rere, end man skulle tro, at finde ordene til at beskrive sit eget perspektiv og fors\u00f8ge at begribe den andens. Det bliver klart, at vores m\u00e5de at bruge sproget p\u00e5 er s\u00e5 gennemsyret af visuelle metaforer, at det kr\u00e6ver flere spejlinger og genspejlinger (endnu en metafor) at forst\u00e5, hvordan vores mentale processer helt konkret adskiller sig fra hinanden. Det typiske billede er dog ogs\u00e5, at mennesker med aphantasia f\u00f8rst i en sen alder (hvis nogensinde) bliver klar over, at deres hjerner fungerer anderledes end flertallets.<\/p>\n

Udover at det kunne v\u00e6re fedt at have den \u201dsuperkraft\u201d, er den manglende evne ikke noget, der som s\u00e5dan begr\u00e6nser mine muligheder i hverdagen. Her skal det n\u00e6vnes, at jeg ikke er ramt af nogen af de ofte relaterede tilstande som SDAM<\/a> og prosopagnosi<\/a>. Hjernen form\u00e5r p\u00e5 forunderlig vis at kompensere for den manglende evne og bruge alternative strategier.<\/p>\n

Erkendelsen af aphantasia har f\u00e5et mig til at se forskellige episoder og oplevelser, jeg har haft gennem livet, i et helt andet lys.<\/p>\n
